Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning Workshops

These workshops are designed to creatively explore and address “blockages” to learning and achievement (social, academic & vocational) within the broad spectrum of the SEAL strategy: Self Awareness, Motivation, Managing Feelings, Empathy and Social Skills. Spiritual, moral and cultural development are included by default. The ultimate aim of the workshops follows DfES SEAL Guidance:

“The intention is to provide pupils and staff with a more flexible repertoire of skills so they can take more control of their lives by actually being able to do things differently, if they choose to, as well as understanding why they should.”

(SEAL DfES Guidance Document section 1.4)

Workshops will:

  • usually involve groups of pupils (2 min – 15 max for effective delivery) in stand alone workshops or in courses over a longer period of time (3 hours min but can range up to 10+ hours depending on requirements).
  • usually aim to achieve a set of agreed outcomes, monitored by the school and workshop leader
  • usually follow the pattern of skill development as identified in the SEAL DfES Guidance Document section 1.4: “…skills are grounded in people’s understandings, values and attitudes and are not just demonstrable behavioural outcomes, divorced from context and meaning. [SEAL] encourages deeper understanding through enquiry, uses concrete examples and promotes learning through the stages of skill development that includes identification, modelling, coaching, feedback, practice, reflection, consolidation, internalisation and generalisation.”
  • use the creative process rather than performance as the focus, and approaches may include a range of methods (eg: games, devising, playwriting, stories, improvisation, Theatre of the Oppressed, Rainbow of Desire, Verfremdungseffekt, exploration of popular culture, various drama conventions, etc).
  • explore a particular issue that has been identified (eg: being a bully, problem relationships, etc) and may require exploration of satellite issues. To this end, workshops are necessarily organic in nature as they are led by pupil need.
  • often involve school staff in a whole school approach to promote a healthier working environment for both staff and pupils.
