Thought of the Week:
~ Last week we looked at the importance of noticing how you choose to tell stories about yourself, your work, your family, etc because it generates positive or negative feelings which in turn shape the way you see your reality. Let’s look at this a little more.
Recently I’ve been studying the work of hypnotist Marisa Peer. She boils the workings of the brain down in a very simple way: Your brain believes and does whatever you tell it to.
This is huge! If you believe you can’t help what you think, feel or do, you’re essentially out of control. But if you take the time to become aware of the fact that you can help it – it’s a game-changer!
Our stories are not set in stone – they change depending on who we tell them to, how much time we have, and what we’re trying to achieve in telling the story. Even more than that, whoever is listening will create their own interpretation of the kind of person you are: victim or victor, complainer or problem solver, sad or happy. You create a feedback loop that affirms or changes how you see yourself and how others see you.
If you choose to create a positive feedback loop you will strengthen your self-worth and confidence, empowering yourself with the strength to create a more positive reality. It takes time, but it’s definitely worth the effort – and it feels wonderful!
Activity Of The Week:
~ The stories we tell ourselves and others are not set in stone. Following on from last week’s activity, become aware of whether you focus on the negative or positive parts of stories that you tell or hear:
- Is your focus on what motivates you or demotivates you?
- What actions or thought patterns happen as a result?
- Do you acknowledge the difficulty and wallow in it, or acknowledge and look for the positive learning / how it made you stronger / what you will change or do differently as a result / how your experience can help you to support and/or change things for others / etc?
Remember that your story is constantly interwoven with others, so what you say and focus on influences you, the people around you, the people around them, and so on! You can choose how you all feel at the end of the story – just imagine the fantastic impact if more and more people choose to empower each other with the stories they create out of the experiences they have!
Be inspired by amazing folk who have done this, for example, Maya Angelou, Viktor Frankl, Anne Frank, JJ Chalmers, Malala Yousafzai, Steven Bartlett, Tang Kwong-po, Nadia Murad – and many, many more!
