Thought of the Week:
~ We humans LOVE telling stories, we do it every day, often several times a day – about what happened to you or someone else.
But did you know that those stories hold power over you, and over others? You create your view of the world, your reality through the way you tell stories and the language you use.
Negative stories have the power to conjure up anger, fear, frustration – they drive social media because we’re more likely to engage if something worries us. Happy, funny, loving stories have the power to create hope, joy, compassion, and fits of giggles – they raise our mood and help us to be right there, in the moment.
When I first realised this, I was aware that I didn’t want to let go of my negative stories, they were part of my identity … but little by little I realised that they were creating a Victim identity and I didn’t want to BE a victim!
So, I looked for more positive ways to tell my story, to use it to acknowledge the tough stuff but to also celebrate the lessons I learned, the transformational action I took as a result, and that made ALL the difference!
Activity of the Week:
~ Are you aware of how you tell, or listen to, stories? Pay attention to the image and identity you create as the words form in your heart and mind – what did you learn or change as a result, how did you demonstrate confidence and resilience?
If you want to go further, write a story you often tell in exactly the way you tell it. Underline the negative parts so you can see where they slip into the telling.
Next, write the things that you learned to do in a more positive, thoughtful, self-caring way because of the situation, and how this made you stronger. Next time it comes up in conversation, you’ll be able to draw on this, and steadily, bit by bit, you can work on your other stories.
It will take time, but each time you do it you’re retraining your mind and focussing on creating a more positive and empowering present, which will positively impact your mood, outlook, and potential for creating future possibilities – your creativity has empowered you!
