What “Empowerment” means
When a new month kicks off with a New Moon, and Spring is just around the corner, you know there’s heightened potential in the air! This month I’m all about What Creative Empowerment Is.
Let’s start with where the word “Empowerment” comes from and what it means. It’s root is a lovely Greek verb:
Endunamoó / Endynamoó
This means: to make strong and enable, to be strengthened, I fill with power.
But this strength is given or shared, rather than being self-made, and the strength it speaks of is a combination of several other Greek words.
The first is “Ischus,” which encompasses many things from physical and mental health to morality and strength of character, etc. It’s about having the capacity for these strengths and using it to make things happen and happen well, in a range of life-enhancing ways.
The next Greek word relating to Strength is “Kratos” which means “Might”. This is potential: it’s the power you have within you, ready and waiting to take action when and however you need to.
Then there’s “Dúnamis” which is the philosophical (stick with me) concept of power, potential, or ability from which we get the word “Dynamic”, a force/power that produces a process of activity, growth, change, and interaction.
So much to unpack and isn’t it fantastic! In this one word, we get a whole range of ideas surrounding what it is to be Empowered.
But where does this Power come from?
I call my work “Creative Empowerment” because I believe the power is supplied by our Positive Creative Core, our Imagination, and inbuilt Creative Capacity to make things happen, a power we have from birth that grows, develops and evolves with us in collaboration with the people and environments we interact with.
We ALL have the potential and ability to Empower each other in the imagination and creation of a better world, but too often the ability to Imagine and Create is stifled by systems of education, places of work, and family or community culture – it’s rarely done intentionally, but the damage it causes is vast.
It can limit potential, drain energy, stall innovation, and stop forward progress so that you lose motivation to learn, grow and evolve into all that you can be – this is
disempowering and does not build firm foundations for positive change that supports and benefits the individual and the collective. It is a self-serving contraction that is at odds with the ever-expanding Universe that we inhabit – a collapsing box we’ve somehow ended up in.
The Pivotal Role of Imagination and Creativity
Creative Empowerment is about lifting the lid on Imagination and Creativity on every level: personal, professional, organisational, educational, communal, cultural, and environmental, and it has a far-reaching impact, as Bill Plotkin identifies:
“… our capacity to imagine the numberless facets of a viable future has far greater consequences and opportunities than ever before. We are now imagining not only for ourselves, but for all Earthly creatures. A highly skilled and nuanced imagination – exercised by not just a few but the majority of humans – now acquires the most fundamental significance for survival.”

Plotkin also quotes Geneen Marie Haugen to further emphasise how crucial it is to unlock our Positive Creative Core:
“We cannot intentionally create unless we are able, first, to imagine… Imagination may be the most essential, uniquely human capacity – creating both the dead-end crises of our time and the doorway through them.”

Creative Conditions for Change
Creative Empowerment builds the Creative Conditions for Change by empowering us with the strength to dynamically imagine, create, and move through the potential doorways that lead to a future of healthy, nurturing, nourishing, and sustainable growth and evolution.
It calls on each of us to (re)discover and (re)ignite our Positive Creative Core and collaboratively play our part, where we are, in changing the world for the better.
